Things I've Learned In Almost 20 Years of Writing Professionally

1) It's always going to take longer than you expect to succeed. Maybe TWICE as long. Maybe more. 

2) Hoping gets you know where. DOING is the key.

3) Figuring out the RIGHT things to do each day is the most important thing you can do in the morning.

4) Having a GREAT idea is like having a pocketful of gold. Spend it wisely.

5) There is no one so great that they ALWAYS write a hit. And there is no one so bad that they couldn't ever help me write a better song. Be open to every co-writer, regardless of previous success. Shooting down every idea from a co-writer just because they haven't had success is just as foolish as accepting every idea from someone that HAS had hits.

6) People contribute to co-writes in different ways. EACH little contribution is valuable.

7) Keeping a REALISTIC attitude keeps you from riding a roller coaster of emotions. Some things you try are going to work and some aren't. That's just life. 

8) LEARN from every mistake and move on. Dwelling on them kills your creativity.

9) NEVER fail to write down a great idea. 

10) ENJOY yourself. This is a tough business. Celebrate every little success. Build up the people around you and cheer for them. If you get a great opportunity, prepare for it and SAVOR it while you are there. Look for the good in every opportunity or situation. Write with people that make you smile. Whether or not you have huge successes, being HAPPY and enjoying life is a victory WAY beyond a #1 song.
