Ted's Promotions and HALO Branded Solutions exclusive solution that provides the greatest selection and most aggressive price points on one of the "hottest" products in our industry the past few years--USB Flash Drives.
The USB's are manufactured, decorated and shipped directly from our facility in China to you.  Therefore, rush orders are not possible.  However, pricing includes all freight.  Please consider both of these factors when you compare pricing to other industry USB sources.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT USB FLASH DRIVES
Names and Capacities

Flash drives are also known as USB drives, Thumb drives, Pen Drives, and Jump drives. They range in memory capacity from 32 Mb to 64 GB with the maximum capacity increasing every year. Most people order 1-2 GB, though that will increase to 4 GB as prices drop.
What's Inside a Flash Drive?

1. Flash memory chip

a. This is the memory component; the equivalent of a hard drive on a computer

b. Manufactured by a limited number of huge companies (Toshiba, Samsung, Hynix, Intel, etc.)

c. A flash memory chip manufacturing facility costs roughly $1 Billion to build

d. No flash chips are manufactured in China or in the US although some are assembled in China

2. Controller or PCB board

a. Produced in China, this "Brain" of the device has the memory chip soldered to it

b. Similar to the processor on a computer

3. Case or Body

a. This is the pretty outside cover that the client sees

b. Produced in China by a large number of manufacturers

c. Except for proprietary designs, all "China Manufacturers" have access to the same generic casings
If the Chips Aren't Made In China What Does a Chinese Manufacturer Do?

1. Buys the components
a. Buy chips, controllers and casings from quality sources

2. Assembles the components -A Chinese Flash Drive factory is essentially an assembly plant
a. Chips are soldered to controllers
b. Data is loaded
c. Controller/chip combo is assembled into casings

3. Prints logos on the casings
a. This is often done by nearby factories that specialize in screen printing, pad printing, embossing, and/or laser engraving

4. QUALITY CONTROL!!!

a. We test 100% of the electronic components of each of our drives 5 times
i. 100% of incoming tier 1 chips are tested
ii. After soldering to controller we test 100% of the assemblies
iii. If there is a data load, we test 100% again
iv. 100% of drives are tested before being packaged

  • For orders over 10k pieces a statistically valid sample is tested
    v. 100% of logos are checked as drives are hand-inserted into individual boxes
  • Why Is Pricing So Volatile?

Flash memory chips are a pure commodity – like corn, oil, or pork bellies. They are bought and sold the same way with the price varying widely based on market demand and production controls. If Apple suddenly buys 10 million 4 GB chips for a new iPod, the reduction in supply makes prices skyrocket. In 2008-9, prices dropped so low that Samsung started reducing production in an engineered effort to increase unit prices, which worked quite well much to the dismay of the premiums industry. Fortunately 2010 has seen more reasonable price fluctuations.
What Are the Different Grades of Flash?

For our purposes, there is "Grade A" or "Tier 1" memory chips and then there is everything else.

Flash chip manufacturers test each production run of their flash modules and resell problematic batches as "black" flash, so called because the company's name is usually blacked out on the chip. The price is lower but failure rates are high. You can also buy "upgraded" flash modules. They are programmed so that when you put them in a computer the computer will make it look like they have more memory than they have.

For example, a 256 Mb drive can be upgraded to appear as if it is a 2 GB drive. However it will still hold only 256 Mb of data.If you try to add more data it will overwrite existing data or tell you the drive is full. Suppliers also sell "recycled flash" that has been recovered from discarded or faulty devices then re-soldered to a PCB board. The failure rate on recycled flash is understandably very high.

The big problem in the flash drive world is that unless you have special testing software, an engineering degree and can open the casing to investigate, you don't know what is inside the drive you are buying!! That is why we buy from a factory that has unparalleled Quality Control and that we visit frequently.
